Procedure of the Month

This is the case of a 68 year-old male suffering from severe back pain for 3 months. Patient failed conservative treatment with high doses of analgesics. MRI was performed, as shown in Figure 1 below. This T2-weighted image clearly revealed evidence of acute fracture with bone marrow edema at the L1 level. Tornier and BioSET Collaborate to Repair Tendons and Ligaments

Edina, Minnesota-based Tornier has entered into an exclusive worldwide technology collaboration with BioSurface Engineering Technologies (BioSET, based in College Park, Maryland).

The collaboration is in the field of orthopedic soft tissue repair where BioSet will develop, commercialize, and distribute products incorporating BioSET's synthetic growth factor technology. The first efforts will focus on ligament and tendon repair products featuring coatings based on BioSET's proprietary F2A synthetic growth factor technology.

"Effective orthopedic soft tissue repair remains an unsolved problem, especially in rotator cuff and other ligament and tendon injuries," said Tornier President and CEO Doug Kohrs. Kohrs also said that this collaboration demonstrates Tornier's long-term commitment in the field of biologic and synthetic materials.

The announcement stated that the BioSET F2A peptide is a synthetic mimetic of the natural human FGF-2 growth factor. FGF-2 and other naturally occurring growth factors are known to play key roles in the body’s healing and repair processes. The companies believe that synthetic growth factor mimetics may address many of the manufacturing, handling, and shelf life challenges that have limited the clinical role of natural growth factors. One of a family of BioSET developed and patented synthetic growth factor mimetics, F2A has been the subject of several published animal studies that have demonstrated the peptide’s FGF-2 mimetic activity.

Tornier has focused on extremity products, including the Aequalis® line of shoulder arthroplasty prostheses, the Salto™ and Salto Talaris™ total ankle prostheses, and a broad portfolio of foot and hand products resulting from its acquisitions of Nexa Orthopedics and DVO Extremity Solutions. In addition to its acquisitions, Tornier has established collaborations with companies such as Bioretec and Tepha Medical.
